I think the art director thing is spot on. I came straight from my degree as a designer and was expected to art direct from the start. And to be honest I much prefer it that way. I get to to the best of both. Is this true outside of digital? I wouldn't know.
At least you don't come across at all smug.
As an Art Director who picked up some computer skills along the way because I like to be in control and have an execution done just right, I do think there are a few too many designers who push the pixels these days rather than look at how the design affects the idea.
Also being a freelancer across print and digital, I can say that there is less of the hands-on design skills needed in digital so sometimes I feel I am twiddling my thumbs a little too long. But when you look at the skill that a digital designer needs such as Action Script programming and having a repository of code somewhere, I think it would be asking too much on fast paced turnaround briefs to expect a detailed eye on the art direction. Often there are issues for digital designers to overcome such as file size and glitches, that the visual aspect can become a bit of a distraction. That's where an Art Director is still useful.
Expecting 1 person to do so many tasks would be unjust to the work and to them. Thankfully for me.
Who is Patrick Colister? Whoever he is, he writes like a cardiac patient walking up Ben Nevis.
Most art directors are just bad storyboard artists anyway. Good riddance.
the live train thing is currently not in service due to someone dying on the network.
Firstly. No kind of advertising needs art directors.
Secondly. That video is missing on vital clip.
This.

As a director of art, Ben can you please change this god awful font back to default on your blog. As your last poll clearly shows the unswerving majority told you it looks shite.
The live train thing is boring
