The New Argos Ad

‘I think he’s Argos-ed it?’
Eh?
I have to confess that I quite liked this when I saw it on TV because I wasn’t really paying attention and I missed that odd bit of dialogue. What does it mean? What’s the point of any of it? Why is Bing beatboxing?
The beatboxing is well done and entertaining (if a massive riiiiiiiiiiiiip of Singin’ in the Rain), but if it don’t make no sense (and ‘keep up to date’ is a justification as weak as ‘I was only following orders’) then it ain’t no good.
And Fred, I don’t think you were being rude. I welcome suggestions for posts.
I think this is great. Haven’t a clue how it links to Argos, but it stands out and I know it’s for Argos so that’s job done. The only slight shame is how the product part of the ad jars visually with the fun bit. Oh, and that a Christmas ad is running in October (which is disgusting when you think about it).
I enjoyed the ad first time – immediately reminded me of the VW singin’ in the rain also – until the kid spoke and it was the biggest pile of fuckpoo.
Can see why Bowie turned it down.
And you can tell they are going to run the shit out of this so it’s going to get a lot more annoying.
They argoe-sed it up
It’s the fucking middle of fucking October. Even if this ad was the greatest ever made, it would still be fucking irritating. October!
Superficial. Vacuous. Big fcukin surprise. I am at a loss.
I’m not one for liking much of CHI’s work, and it slightly pains me to say I agree with Phil, I like the ad. I like the campaign.
Sorry Ben, it makes total sense to me, and who really cares if it’s like VW? Lots of ads are like other ads.
But it is bloody annoying to have Xmas ads in October…so for that reason my contempt for CHI is back again.
I care if it’s like VW because it devalues what we as creatives do for a living.
I know things aren’t exactly at their best right now but if it looks like we can just check out what was a big ad five years ago and rehash the idea then it doesn’t look like we do very much that’s worth valuing, worth paying for or worth giving a shit about.
I don’t really care about Christmas ads in October. I live up the Big Smoke, see, and Selfridges and Harrods start Christmas in August.
And yes, the Creme Eggs will be out on New Year’s Day.
Again.
More white people do black people stuff, just like Yeo Valley. Funny 15 years ago.
VW used a strategy that had been trotted out and executed in a similar way before.
more recently the likes of muller have done the same. now this one.
it doesn’t bother me massively because it’s different enough in it’s execution.
i just don’t see what the fuck it has to do with argos?
i first saw it with my dad. he chuckled. then said, “it’s only funny the first time you see it i bet”.
he’s right.
