at last! popular culture steals from advertising*

Here is an ad for American Airlines from the 1999 D&AD annual:
And now look at this preview poster for next year’s Batman film:
It’s a flagrant rip.
I hope someone sues.
(Thanks to Elliot, Cam and Wrongpoint for pointing out and finding the American Airlines image.)
*Joke.
It might be a rip, but it’s way better isn’t it?
I wonder if the new Batman film will have a massive digital/viral campaign too? You know, one aimed at the people who were going to see the film anyway.
..Easily the best post this month Ben,
Dont get me wrong I like the Batman poster, and it’s a far sexier image, (although working with the Bat-sign is a pretty good start point for doing a poster)
Buuuuutttt Mr.Reddy should ultimately win this Epic battle against the caped crusader and get all the credit because really you could stick any old shape at the top of the buildings…. the original observation of looking up at the skyscrapers is the thing that he brought to the party. with a bit of retouching 😉
Mark’s a don of beautiful, simple art direction. we never really got to work together during his brief stint at McCann. My Loss.
Jane Horrocks & Mark Addy are both about to appear in a series based in a supermarket called Trollied on Sky 1. Which is interesting as they have both appeared in recent years in Tesco’s advertising. So you could say the rolls have been reversed here as well.
I can’t wait for that.
It sounds like a fucking brilliant show that I will run home to watch.
Actually it’s not the first time that popular culture has borrowed from advertising that I’m aware of… Here’s an Asda poster I knocked out in 1985, followed by a still from Chicken Run circa 2000 (… then again I did borrow it from ‘The Great Escape’ in the first place, so maybe it doesn’t count). http://twitpic.com/5q08gl
They are completely different ideas. One is of an aeroplane and one is of a bat.
Completely different.
I believe you are mistaken. That is an ad for Batman. That is not the film Batman.
Mr Denton,
Is there anyone that Mel Gibson Hasn’t abused?
it looks a bit like wonder woman’s plane…
The front of the aeroplane looks like a dildo complete with bell end and ribbed for her pleasure.
