It may sound weird but that BBC article gave me goosebumps. Not good ones. I’m not the type to stock up on tinned food but I do get the feeling everything is coming apart at the seams.
Yes.
Sometimes I like to mix the shots of people falling off their skateboards with a bit of political analysis.
It’s truly fucking terrifying.
no. 1, we are in steady evolution. but. in 2008 i was sure the financial crisis would end in inflation sooner or later with all the joys it brings. now, if even i could see it coming. what the fuck does that tell you. i know what it tells me. it doesnt mean im a brilliant genius. i may be, who knows, but not because of this, ha. i believe the problem is not capitalism. its a mindset. anyway…
something marxist-y i read years ago. fuck im old http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Society_Of_The_Spectacle
many smart words in there.
John Gray rocks, and if you haven’t read ‘Straw Dogs’ (no relation to the film) you should. But the most astute analysis of the current situation is from renowned economist, Arsene Wenger.
“I believe that Europe overall, as a unit, is going towards a massive crisis, which nobody really expects now. I am convinced that Europe will go into a huge financial crisis within the next three weeks or three months and maybe that will put everything into perspective again.” Bring on the January transfer window!
Mary. Did you buy any gold when you spotted the inflation? I notice you didn’t buy a Shift key for your computer laptop.
Just saying.
you. no, i didnt buy any gold. you tell me what a lump of gold is good for. something (ready) to use makes more sense.
i doubt the financial crisis and inflation are an existential threat. my money for shit hitting the fan is on wasting finite resources for wank until they are too expensive, even for essential things. i expect to see this in my lifetime.
the shift key is special. something i wont touch until i really, really need it.
Ponzi systems always fail eventually.
Any systems that relies on confidence isn’t much of a system is it?
Once an economy has no way to re-invest in itself due to running out of debtors where does it go?
China has introduced a system for it’s citizens to invest in silver in particular, to hedge against the collapse of the US dollar. That has to be alarming doesn’t it?
But nobody really knows do they? Plenty of people have predicted the end of the world before.
I am going to read Straw Dogs, thank you. The article was beautifully written so despite how depressing it all is I wanted more.
Old certainties have eroded, that’s for sure. Greed is at the heart of it. I work in advertising so it would be ignorant not to acknowledge some degree of responsibility for that. That said, I am not a greedy person. I suppose I’m a participant rather than a believer. Anyone else?
Damo, I should point out that ‘Straw Dogs’ challenges assumptions about what it means to be human, whereas his new one ‘False Dawn’ is a critique of global capitalism.
good to watch this http://youtu.be/gDW_Hj2K0wo from time to time
Thanks Chicken.
Mary. Just saying if you had bought gold, say a year ago and then sold it again, say last week, you’d have done very well. I know it’s a useless lump of metal but idiots who don’t realise this will give you money for it. I know. Weird.
Here is one of those straight forward and et funny explanation of why the European economies are doomed.

I am fan of Bill Hicks too Mary but I do think that advertising can be a soft target for stand-ups sometimes. Advertising is more of a symptom of the problem rather than the real problem. IMHO
you. i see. i know. i hadnt really thought of buying something to resell with the aim of accumulating financial wealth, having added zero value mayself. im such an idiot. weird.
jim, im a fan of advertising too. but its easy to say “im not responsible”. better to go the inconvenient way and do a reality check sometimes. its hard to argue against hick’s rage in the video, imho.
Your Water-water-everywhere app has been a great inspiration to me. It shows you can do cool stuff outside of the daily routine and actually do something good. A friend of my started something to help people make apps. Kinda works like Sell-a-band. Might wanna check it out. Cheers. http://youtu.be/zRskOKTqxo0
Thanks, Marius. That looks very interesting.
