Excellent new Toyota ad

From the brief, ‘Our interior looks like shit but we’d like to pretend it’s beautiful’, this is a great piece of work.
It has some un-annoying shots of the product, a darkly funny story with a real character (that happens to be one of those ugly cats you’d like to hate, but in this case you end up quite liking), and fine direction and editing bringing it all together.
Funny.
Much fun!
I really hate stuff with cats on the interweb but really like this.
Can’t help but feel it would be better if it was a dog. Still good though.
This is excellent, but perhaps I’m being a bit thick – I don’t get the end. Why does he come back to life and end up with his head hanging out of the window.
Whatever – it’s a very short 90 seconds.
I actually laughed out loud, which felt weird watching an ad.
If the brief was what you said it was, will anyone really get that? Won’t they just think this is a great way to show the joy of being in a Corolla? … Which could be the joy of being in any car. But I don’t care, I think it’s fucking brilliant, genuinely funny, and hope it gets remembered as the TOYOTA cat ad.
Ok. The cat has 9 lives. If the cats is dying every time, why does it go to the vet alive? Just saying like.
I don’t think it dies every time, just at the end, which also answers George’s point.
Therefore maybe a dog would’ve been better?
I didn’t like it. Sorry.
@9: I think the cat works best because you don’t really like it, making its injuries funny. A sweet dog (most dogs are sweet to someone) would fuck that right up.
It’s like pratfalls: funny when they happen to a man; not so funny when they happen to a woman.
In my opinion it’s very good. There’s also a good iPhone ad out at the mo informing us of its feature of being able to take panoramic picures. Apart from a wasted 5 seconds at the front it’s a good clear, lightly funny (wry smile), simple, product demo but with an idea in it. Weird.
In my opinion of course. Naturally I’m wrong about that.
@Paul: the iPhone ads are indeed excellent (winky smile made out of punctuation). The five seconds at the start really aren’t wasted. I don’t think the ad would work without them.
It’s funny because it is a cat. A slightly mangy, flat-faced one at that. I love it when people say they don’t like ads like this. It makes me understand why wars happen, why people like flat-packed furniture and why America exists.
I took my cat to the vet once. He didn’t need the ride home. True dat.
I like the iPhone ad. It is indeed, excellent and informative. I am thinking about buying said phone and taking a panoramic photograph as good as the one shown.
A ‘Winky smile’ is something Jimmy Saville would say.
So is, ‘Now then, now then, little handicapped girl, your uncle Jimmy is just going to fix it for you to…’
Jim’ll Fuck It.
dogs travel in cars all the time. cats never do.
i can’t believe this ad is being picked apart by ‘logic’ arguments. that are in themselves, illogical.
it’s just bloody good. simple as that. if any of you have done any better, please show me.
i know i’ve done a lot worse.
Is there any idea that can’t be improved with the substition of a dog/cat? It’s like that one that DDB did a while back with the dog – confident inside the car and shaking outside it. Dull insight + a dog = advertising gold.
Don’t mean to sound touchy. No-one likes to be known as touchy, particularly not Jimmy Savile.
Amusing, and well done but where is the brand?
The cat follows its “heart” rather its “head” and I thought Toyota is all about a cerebral choice … just thinking…. maybe because Toyota’s brand perception is damaged by recalls they need to be… hearty…
oh my fucking god.
Jeepers. ‘Heart’ vs Head’. In this sector?! You’re kidding me right?
Toyota come up with a car that looks pretty much the same as a slew of cars that come out of Korea. But the Toyota probably has a price premium. And I doubt that it has much – if any – engineering innovation to justify the extra cash.
Make people love the car and the brand with some funny, engaging advertising. Which this is.
End. Of.
Nice. Prefer these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GBsSGEy8Xo&feature=relmfu
I’ve only ever taken the cat in the car to the vet’s. It was my Dad’s and 20 years on, I have the scars to prove it. It’s funny because it’s so true. Brilliantly done.
