It’s a truth universally acknowledged that when you check out the jury for an upcoming award show you inevitably despair at the number of no-mark fuckwits from Micronesia who have been allowed to run the rule over your lovingly-crafted works of genius.
So thank you Creative Circle, who have noticed, pointed out and wittily skewered this bane of the modern era (interest declared: they’re the work of my mate Adam Tucker):
Yeah but i’d rather win most awards over CC, regardless of what twat is judging. I find because quite a few top agencies don’t enter CC its a hollow meaningless victory. In order of value, for me it goes like this…

And that’s it. Sorry, I now work in America, so most of the others are irrelevant to me. Having said that, I’ve been paying less and less attention to awards in general for a while. Come on… admit it: they’re a bit fucking silly, aren’t they? And the number of them, along with the daft judges, mean they really don’t ‘matter’ in the way they used to. Look at what happened to get you that trophy, and look how many others have them (and how good those others are) and you’ll soon stop caring. In my day, there were only a few Pencils and Lions awarded each year, and the juries were composed of industry giants. Now both factors have changed for the worse.
I admire CC’s Brit-stance, and of course the efforts that friends of mine have put into increasing its standing, but I think even they’d admit that it never quite rose up to D&AD/Cannes levels. The lack of entries is one reason, but I also find the judging to be another. I assume (from the ad campaign) that this year is going to be different, but in the past many younger creatives, whose views had yet to earn anyone’s respect, were allowed to judge the earlier rounds, devaluing the entire thing.
I’m straying a little into actually writing that post now, but an award’s prestige depends on four things: difficulty, rarity, judges and reputation (which comes from the first three). If your award isn’t regarded as highly as the Oscars then there’s a compromise in one of those factors. The bigger the compromise, the less of a shit people will give.
Someone should start up a scheme called Ten, where the ten best CDs vote on the ten best pieces of work in each category (in order; none of this ‘they’re all as good as each other’ nonsense). Only the top three get an actual trophy. No more than ten included, but you might have less. Ceremony in Claridges. Give it ten years, see how much prestige it has.
But who would decide who the ten best CDs are? Woukd it be based on awards won??!
Ad people getting excited about ads about ad awards shows, for an ad award show.
Never has the navel garnered so much attention.
These ads reinforce everything that is parochial and backward-looking about the UK industry, as epitomised by the utterly irrelevant Creative Circle.
All we need now is an anti-big data ululation and then we can all head to The Ivy.
If you are a Creative under 40 and truly believe that winning advertising awards will guarantee your longevity/success in the advertising industry of tomorrow, you are sorely, sorely mistaken.
The days of “star teams” is over (the majority of whom built their success on countless print/outdoor campaigns – the opportunity for which have died alongside those tired, forgotten mediums), the world’s view of the industry has changed (people don’t talk about ads in the pub like they did in even ten years ago) and the clients/purse-string-holders of even the greatest brands/agencies know that the future is about financial survival first and creative standards second.
I’m not saying it’s a good thing. But it’s a fact.
So, entering/winning/writing adverts for a second rate domestic advertising awards programme is a total fucking waste of time.
Nicely written print ads, mind…

An amusing chat down the pub turned into a terrible, terrible idea.
@Oh God is right about the importance of financial survival. But winning awards is as crucial as it ever was. More so, in many ways. The more you win, the longer you last. Have a look at the top CDs and say it ain’t so (yes I know there is one glaring exception, but the argument still stands).
The global creative directors of your network are bonused and rewarded on their success at the ‘shows’. They pass that pressure downwards. Better start writing the good stuff. Or cheating. Or both.
I find it consistently impossible to care what any of these awards scheme juries think.
You don’t need to go abroad to find no mark CDs. There are plenty of home grown ones.
I like the idea of TEN.
I do also like the print ads on this post. They are art directed perfectly. Sadly the film is shit, it feels forced and doesn’t quite hit the mark, which is all down to performance a bit like those recent McDonalds ads with the same mockumentary interview style, which we equally as nauseating.

There’s a real split between Cannes and D&AD. They are the 2 big boys aren’t they.

I speak to some of our directors and they say the Pencil is the holy grail. I’m not the first to say it, but I think D&AD has lost its clout – give me a Lion any day (then again, I’m not the one actually making the work).
Creative Circle doesn’t get a look in sadly.
I was speaking to one of the jurors in Cannes last year. It was the first time he’d judged there. He was blown away by the standard of judges and judging – amazing people who have created incredible work. They picked apart every frame of every film in every category. That’s how to judge awards – the best people putting work under extreme scrutiny; analysing the absolute minutiae.

And ‘I Spent It On Myself’ still won a kajillion Grands Prix?
I thought it was a bunch of CDs from Chad and Yemen doing tequila bombs while throwing darts at a wall.
I went to the podium for the first ever time last year.
I’m afraid to say that rather enjoyed it.

I pick up ECD and take home. He only won 3 gold Cannes Lion and one Epica. He so poor he live in Beckenham.

Oh come on, this is really funny. It’s only meant to appeal to people that work in advertising – so it hits its target right between the eyes.
