As someone with a keen interest in language, I wonder when the world ‘mate’ came to mean ‘arsehole’:
i think it’s a question of inflection and intent. like how nobody uses the c-word menacingly better than the Brits. it’s a skill, mate.
It’s an Aussie thing isn’t it, call your mates ‘cunts’ and you call cunts ‘mate’ etc.

My kids and I do that routine for hours on end.
Along with
“I’m not being funny right, but….”
Translation: “You’re talking bollocks. Mate”
