“I think with one exception I’ve never changed an opening sentence after a book was completed. […] It’s like that joke about the violin maker who was asked how he made a violin and answered that he started with a piece of wood and removed everything that wasn’t a violin.” do you take notes? “I take the position that if I can forget it, it couldn’t have been very good.”

Women struggling to drink water (thanks, W).
Excellent William Gibson article. Reading of two of my literary ‘heroes’ at present, Galton and Simpson. Refreshingly they saw themselves as craftsmen not artistes.
Rooney’s a bit wooden, but Giggs can deliver a line. Useful when you’re shagging your wife’s sister or your brother’s shagging your sister or Imogen Thomas’ sister or something and have to fib about what you’ve been up to…
I like women struggling to drink water, but there’s nothing better than a meta-meme http://women-struggling-to-drink-cdcs.tumblr.com/ (probably NSFW)
Good point by ORH – surely a chance was missed re strap – for when red blooded males want to play away from home. Oh, c’mon it is Friday!
