Ace new VW ad

Originality? Yes.
Engagement? Yes.
Strong idea? Yes.
Consistent with brand over long-running campaign? Yes.
Vaguely amusing? Yes.
It brings to mind an idea Paul Briginshaw and Malcolm Duffy had while I was at AMV. They wanted to show 55 seconds of people singing ‘I Will Survive’, followed by the Volvo log (or something like that). It never happened, so I’m glad something fairly similar has graced the airwaves 15 years later.
(PS: some people have asked about the ‘mystery’ post that was up here earlier. They mystery has been solved. The long, boring film was for the Geneva Motor Show. The above ad is the proper commercial.)
This is just great.
(Bit confused – is this the real ad, or the one from the motor show? Or was the other one from the motor show?)

It’s questionable whether this is a good ad or not on all those counts but what’s not is the nonce behind the wheel drives like an arse.
That homeless ad is one of my favourites, powerful.
The VW one doesn’t do it for me sadly.
It is different and good… But I can’t help but feel the spot shows me how My Way has been copied, but doesn’t prove the car has. Feels like borrowed interest. Yet on a gut level, I still like it.
It has an idea!
An advertising idea, I mean. Not something executional like ‘wrestling hippo’ or ‘underwear goblins.’
It’s only now I see an ad with an idea I realise how much I’ve missed them.
Saying that, I don’t actually like this idea very much. But who cares, that’s subjective, this is a good ad.
it makes me happy that every “copy” is far more interesting than the “original”.
@Anonymouse
It would be better without an idea. Official Fact.
Just leave off the endline et voila! Improvement.
Somehow it makes me want to own one. I haven’t tried to overanalyse that.
The actual track used isn’t even by Sinatra.
CC, without the endline I hate this ad.
It just becomes a silly (boring) film with a nice product demo at the end.
Without the endline, what’s the second ad? Or the poster? It just becomes just another execution; another one-hit, high-budget, YouTube wank.
I really don’t like this. When it came on TV over the weekend it just annoyed me and I switched to another channel before the end. Hate the different singing and hate the track. Looks and feels cheap and thus cheapens the brand.
It’s a shame nearly half the ad is the usual Cliché.
I was only messin’
I am surprised you like this actually. I sort of dint mind the conceit but execution ally it doesn’t make sense. Logically it should end with a shot of Sinatra singing not the car. It’s messy because of that. Doesn’t quite work.
Meh.
Dreadful ad. Really really dreadful.
Terrible. Another ‘idea’ nicked off you tube. Two ads in one.
Also to be pernickety it shows New York New York and the MGM next to treasure island which is down the other end of the strip. I may be very sad but find this annoying.
If only in the end Frank Sinatra was singing while driving the car…
Nice.
I get the opposite from it. The awful singing and clips make me want to switch over immediately. If anyone waits to the end all they see is a car on a roof – what? I get what they’re trying to say but you know it’s executed pretty badly.
It’s really not good.
