I think Dollar Shave Club might have been more influential than we first thought…

Cock-suckingly weird.
Assumed it was a spoof product for the first 40 or so seconds. Brave though and funny(ish)
It’s memorable, but maybe if they’d just told me from the start why I should buy their headphones over a pair of Beats ones I’d be more impressed. As it is they cost about the same and I don’t see that ad convincing many people.
Saw this Kickstarter fund raising film recently and thought it had been influenced by Dollar Shave Club too:

Weird for the sake of being weird. Could’ve been a great ad otherwise.
With S&C on this. Seems they knew they were treading on DSC toes – and had to aim off at every turn to avoid the comparison you’ve still managed to make Ben.
“The Tailor” – why so much dead air around that moment? All the energy in the spot seemed to go pffft right then and there.
So are we now saying that Dollar Shave Club was the first ad to do “Person walks along explaining stuff while stuff happens that makes it interesting” and all such ads are derivative of that?
I think DSC reinvigorated the genre with gleefully surreal humour.
I’d say that This ad would not have happened without DSC.

This new ad for Cheerios wouldnt have happened without DSC either.
I guess these ads wouldn’t have happened without looking into the future and seeing DSC either…

Well, other than a walking talking man (the first two) and surreal humour (the last one) they’re not really like DSC.
DSC and this ears thing are cut from the same cloth – a cloth from which your examples are not cut.
“You’re an exchange student, aren’t you Sebastian. All hair gel and fancy loafers”
OK – Yes, there are plenty of ads with people walking around explaining stuff, but this ad and DSC are peas in a pod.
They’re walking around the ‘factory’ explaining exactly how their product is made and sent to you.
More examples of ads where men walk around and talk to camera are fine, but that’s not the point I’m making.
I tried to click “like” on that comment S!S!. BCT was the original walking while talking about the product ad. Legendary IMO.
Does it matter really? It’s a mechanism as much as ‘boy meets girl’ is a mechanism. Its execution is different enough and good enough to avoid any mindless rip off claims. Personally felt the ending with the ‘wet willy’ made it. The whole ad coulda been just that ‘wet willy’ feeling. Too much ‘wet willy’ in one ‘comment’…
Thanks Vic and Vinny. Nice BCT is remembered.
Get some relief from the scorching sun in the cinema.
