Good lord, a good ad for san miguel
I think it’s fair to say that the history of San Miguel advertising is littered with some of the worst attempts at commercial communication of all time.
My brain has cast the vast majority of them from my memory, but just the one that went ‘Si-si-si-si San Miguel’ is enough to send shivers of revulsion through my poor guts.
So thank golly for this new one from Saatchi and Saatchi London (interest declared: it’s by David Goss and Ollie Wolf, who are friends of mine):
The ad spans the life of San Miguel from its introduction in the 1950s to current day, and uses a range of film stock, Hi-8 super8, super16, S-VHS and 35mm to give authenticity to the eras, as well as using vintage bottles and chalices.
And it was directed by Daniel Wolfe, who directed this:
I think ‘good’ is the key word here, it’s not great or excellent, just good but seems a lot better due to all the other crap around. Although it’s the best ad to come out of saatchis in a while.
Are you saying it’s better than the others or are you saying it’s good.
I’ve seen strategies for washing powders more original.
Nicely directed though, I’ll give you that.
Very stylish. I ♥ New York Cup cake bakery Lurpak ad.
The short film is really, really great. Quite like the ad too. Nicely made and the line at the end helps pop the slight pretension of a talking beer.
I must declare an interest too as I, like you Ben, sat in the office next to these two fellas and rather like their facial hair and their attitude. I must also add that the SM brief was pretty rubbish and this ad isn’t.
But the short film is just brilliant and reminds me of a past that slightly passed me by.
That promo always reminds me of Weekender by Flowered Up. One of the most brilliantly directed pieces of work (by WIZ) I’ve seen. Look it up if you haven’t seen it.
Just found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9zScYbBP-I
That’s good stuff. Hats off to them.
I’m saying it’s better than the others and it’s good.
As far as Saatchis goes, the Walls dog ads were pretty darn good as well.
It’s nice.
Something a little different that feel appropriate for the brand.
The most interesting beer in the world.
Lovely. Not sure it needed to be longer than a 40 though.
But pure dead gorge.
On a similar note, I thought this was an amazing piece of film for what I can only assume is the German B&Q.

It iz indeed ze German B&Q.
They do some pretty good ads.
In this one, they got Blixa Bargeld (I guess he’s like a German version of Nick Cave) to read their catalogue:

… the memories. my warehouse days were spent in dark fucking ruins, filled with smoke and unnaturally smiling, buzzing people. and some plainclothes. we never had chocolate before going out though. always waiting till sunday evening. fun it was. but careful kids, it will never be the same again. some people got stuck under the ice wagon.
anonymouse. it is a diy store indeed. heimat berlin should be the agency responsible.
san miguel is pleasing to the eye. and ear. thats more than i can say about the most interesting man in the world, or prudential.
I went to my first D&AD this year and I sat there and watched them not give that music video an award. I don’t ever want to go again.
Why in god’s name have they not done an ad where boys and girls are in a bar having a great time while they drink San Miguel. Jesus. They missed a trick there. Would have stormed research.
Nice. I would try it based on the spot. And yes, it is the most interesting man in the world. As told by a beer.
brilliant short, quite like the ad. I worked on San Miguel once and we wanted to do a thing about Spanish footy songs. Never quite got off the ground but the singing puts ‘this is how it feels to be City’ to shame…
In other news I learned through this post that Liam Maher died 2 years ago. Weekender is still bloody brilliant.
Isn’t that beer brewed in the Philippines? Why are they trying to pretend it’s Spanish? Would it be a stretch to imply r@c/sm? (I didn’t say it. I just implied it.)
I’m sorry, but you can let your friends know that San Miguel Beer is over 100 years old and is of Philippine Heritage, and not Spanish.
The commercial that you are featuring is as ignorant as having a Guinness ad portraying German history.
It’s ridiculous to even have this approved.

scroll up on that wiki link to see that it was started in Manila.
David and Ollie are disgustingly talented.

spanish roots. german influence as well. whats the fucking matter.

You’re talking about the wrong San Miguel anyway…
excellent?
far from it.
try forgettable.
I bet you anything that this is overrun within next minute.
idea is pretty mediocre.
direction saves it.
don’t congatulate creatives, but a director.
facts vs marketing.
Hahaha. fucking pwned.
Fraggle: Fosters is brewed in the UK. As are many others.
I reckon it’s just a game.
They don’t serve Ferrero Rocher at Ambassadors parties.
Shane McGowan went to school at Westminster (an awful, awful place where only terrible people go.)
It’s pretty much all a lie. In the same way that playing cowboys and indians when we were kids is a lie.
Reality is boring. Lies are more fun. Worst thing that happens in this scenario is someone spends £3 on this beer as opposed to another.
‘Drivin’? I’m fuckin flyin man!’
The chase and status video is just so good i don’t know what else to say.
So i’ve just double dropped at my desk and i’m seeing my CD in 10 minutes.
Its ok.
But it reminds me of Karmarama’s recent lastminute.con advert.
Is it Spanish? Good thing I didn’t say the spot was racist. Phew.
Feels very Chris Milk.
Very nice film.
You can imagine being pissed and trying to say the line.
pretty nice bank of scotland ad by rainey kelly:

It’s a great advertisement, i don’t normally leave comments but this ad really impressed me.
