John Cleese finally makes another decent ad
Posted in Uncategorized
John Cleese has made dozens of excellent ads but not many in the last twenty years.
So it’s good to see him back with this lovely spot shot by Tom Kuntz:
Great editing, direction and performance to make what could have been a big fat nothing into something really very good.
For an ad that’s pretty much 30 seconds of someone talking this is pretty spot on. Granted, that someone talking is John Cleese, but you know what I mean.
Really like the American ads for DirectTV (also by Tom Kuntz), too. http://youtu.be/7udQSHWpL88
If that’s what’s considered “really very good” these days, then I really do weep for the industry.
Cannes bound.
You have to hand it to Tommy, on paper this must’ve looked less attractive than an octogenarian’s ringpiece. However, he has eeked magic out of every word and a great performance out of the now humourless, bitter, multi-married, in-it-for-the-dosh, ex-Python himself.
Weep away, Mike.
I think it’s been a great couple of weeks for advertising.
Would you care to expand on that comment, Ben?
Cleese gives a good performance and it looks nice etc etc. But I couldn’t get a single word he was saying. It’s very distracting.
If by a “… great couple of weeks for advertising.” you are including this alongside the Paralympics and Axe ads, I don’t agree, it doesn’t belong anywhere near those two.
Three good ads is a great couple of weeks. They don’t all have to be the same standard.
