The new John lewis ad
Posted in Uncategorized
Ah, Christmas is somewhat upon us, and you know what that means: yes, the new John Lewis ad:
Old favourite sung by an up-to-date young lady? Check.
Heartwarming story involving a gift? Check.
Dougal Wislon? Check.
Cute kiddie? Check.
Very good ad? Check.
I preferred last year’s, but that’s like saying I preferred something very good to something also very good; A Mr. Kipling bakewell tart to an interesting copy of Private Eye, perhaps.
But never mind what I think, what do you think? Thinking is so important.
It is ace. That is all. Bye.
I think it was properly funny. Very Misery Bear. And then horrifically manipulative, sentimental and tear-jerky, which made me love it even more.
I dislike Xmas.
This thing just made me feel Xmasy.
Good idea. Well executed & produced. Good client for allowing the time to make it a great film.
Well done Adam & Eve. Lucie who produced it & Dougal for the tiny bits that make great film.
All I want for Xams is to to the next one.
HUMBUGGERY THAT’S GOOD!
I’m giving this a Magpie thumbs up. Sweet choice of music. Lovely heart warming story. Mums and kids will love it… Dad’s on the other hand will be thinking, where’s my bloody present!
It’s lacking the emotion of the previous ads because it’s using animated snowmen, not real people. Verges on a comedy sketch or a kids’ cinema territory. Nice, but will never bring a tear to the eye like other ads could at the wrong time of the month.
I think it condones shoplifting.
And potential rape.
Sneaky little fuck, that snowman.
It’s nice. Nicely shot, nicely directed, nice music, nice sentiment, nice story. It just doesn’t tell me why I should buy my presents at JL.
It’s ok. Nothing more, nothing less.
Interesting, Cat. I feel quite the opposite.
Real people bring out the cynic in me. I hate their white middle class, perfect shitty faces. I want their sell-out advertising hitler youth houses to burn down.
It’s hard for me to hate a snowman though. It bypasses the adult cynic and allows the child in me to enjoy the story and feel a little emotion.
This is the first JL ad that I’ve watched more than once voluntarily for entertainment reasons.
I think they’ve made their campaign bigger by making it more fictional, and I love them for it.
The real triumph is that, even though it’s a snowman, it doesn’t feel fictional at all.
A whole Christmas movie in a minute. Top class.
Dreary.
Reminded me an awful lot of… https://vimeo.com/12155835
How did it survive the shopping experience of John Lewis? Shit loads of xmas shoppers, queues for the till. That combined with the 28 degree heat in that place…means this ad is bullshit. And where did it get the cash from? And how do you put a gloves on if your hands are twigs?
I haven’t felt as emotionally attached to a snowman since, well, The Snowman.
Looks fantastic. Music is great. But I knew how the ad would unfold about 3″ in. Not a patch on last year’s
I agree with Anon #10. The fictional character makes it even more poignant. A lovely ad. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about Xmas and John Lewis.
Marius.
go fuck yourself.
in other news. it’s growing on me.
Is the follow up where she get him socks again?
It is nice. Just nice. Not great. Nothing special. I am not sure how many times I’ll be able to watch this on TV and still enjoy it.
booooooooring.
90 seconds really?
Guessed the outcome in 2.
