Very excellent press campaign

You might recall that I have trouble posting images on here, so check the link.
I’m particularly impressed by the art direction, which makes these impossible to avoid reading.
And such a simple idea that I’ve never seen before (cue several comments with links to Spanish ads from 1995 that are similar).
They are nice. Some are better than others, but there are some very good ones. These are the latest offering from the new Ogilvy Chip Shop. There’s a reason you see them mainly around Canary Wharf.
Chip shop?
How disappointing.
Chip shop? Explain please.
Made for awards. Not really a proper campaign. One where the client lets you do it how you want and signs it off, but only for it to run in a few places to qualify for awards.
It comes from the practice in years past of creating ads for the local chip shop, the lack of client rigour making it far easier to make the ads as award-friendly as possible.
Oh the humanity!
They certainly stand out with the art direction but the messages are sometimes very generic and overused. From “Won’t cost you an arm and a leg” to “Wish you were here”. That’s my only gripe with it.
Agree, at least they are using a different idea to people sitting in the sun, relaxing in a pool etc. I like ’em. Also quite like this, while we’re on the subject:

Instead of doing that, couldn’t they…..
oh never mind.
Human?
Any real entries?
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not totally legit. This is what happens when you let the Saffer scam merchants run creative departments. All they care about is Cannes and their next stop on the world tour
It’s fucking tragic that a campaign as good and as well executed as this isn’t running nationally and making the agency good money. Agree about the art direction – exceptional.
how small is that logo! hahaha
All agencies run work for awards, Its common practice. As long as the client is on the Agency roster and they sign it off where is the harm. The only Agencies that don’t are usually the crappy ones. Anyway I think they are very clever, damn fine work, wish i’d made them.
Where’s the harm…?
Sheesh…
Lovely work. Simple, clever and engaging.
Where’s the harm? Hahahahanahahanaha x million.
It’s not Spanish…but here’s the link: http://www.newyorkfestivals.com/worldsbest/2011/pieces.php?iid=419208&pid=1
I’m at Ogilvy at the moment. Their award trawling activities are really quite pathetic. The fact that they do it at all is just weak beyond belief. The fact that the ads they produce doing it are so fucking dull makes it even worse.
Where’s the life in this shit? It’s enough to put me off going on holiday.
@John Newton Ha! Brilliant, it’s been done! I thought for one minute I needed to start working harder because somebody had had an original thought.
Ha ha, indeed. I love this business. We’re all such terrible cunts.
@dada.
If you take their money, you should perhaps treat them with a little courtesy.
Yours – man from the nineteenth century.
But, but, but…
…these ads are fucking amazing.
Surely the point about most fake ads is that invariably they’re pretty much unrunnable in the real world.
Unlike these little puppies…
Dada, if you’re not happy at Ogilvy i think you should just book yourself a holiday from expedia and just go. you sound like one of those angry, unhappy and untalented (so called) creative who can’t get a job in any other agency. a one way ticket might be the solution
Funny how they really added something to something done before.
Adam T’s reply is my favourite ever on any adblog.
BORIS.
people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
should we go through your entirely un-original body of work piece by piece?
or should we maybe just stick with your use of tube maps for nasal spray?
that aside.
it’s a shame its scam. it’ll win awards though. they always do.
AdamT – your comment deems you more than worthy of joining Mr G Legs, Ben and I on a sweary lunch.
Top stuff.
i did wonder what an online company was doing in print in 2013.
but I still think it’s a kickass idea. bannerize em!
Vinny,
Are you of the opinion that an online company should only advertise online?
Just asking…
@ Dada’s friend – you don’t sound like my friend at all. Why are you getting so worked up? I only commented because I care. I just haven’t got much time for ‘tip of the hat’ creativity that no one outside advertising gives a fuck about.
Also is scam ok? I’d be interested to hear your views on this.
@Annonymouse – fair point but, you know, you can’t buy love.
@Dada No wonder you are so fucked off, Writing long copy ads for British Gas all day the end up in peoples bins must make you a little angry and red faced…..
[…] been done before but that same simplicity makes me just sit and stare. Word on the street/Ben Kay’s blog is that the ads are limited run and have been made just to be entered into awards (where I imagined […]
Ah, I’m getting some idea of the kind of mind that came up with these ads now.
