For fans of The Deuce: when Times Square was gritty.
The utterly fascinating Race of Life (thanks, J):
The bird:
Sleeping people embroidered onto handmade pillows (thanks, N).
Wow. That video is pretty racist.
In what way is it racist?
Surely it’s the opposite.
Seriously?? Black people come from broken homes. Black people grew up without father figures. And only don’t have to pay for college because they’re athletic.
It’s all there in ultra-patronising form.
It’s saying that if people (of whatever colour) didn’t have those advantages they’d find it difficult to make as much progress as others.
The fact that the ones near the back are generally of colour tells us that society is racist and set up to help white people.
The film isn’t racist.
i loved the Times Square link. One of my most vivid memories is driving my horse and carriage into Times Square at midnight for the very first time. It was dark! No lights. It was like the movie Escape from New York. The seventies NYC persisted in 1990. It was truly edgy.
