Adweek’s ten best ads of the year.
In reverse order:

Well played. What the yanks do best – well written, well directed humour.

Perfectly reasonable but nothing more.

I thought it was fine but again, nothing special.
Utterly brilliant.
I don’t think this one has aged that well.
Great craft. The ‘idea’ doesn’t really do it for me.

Boring shite. If you cried at this you have a heart of blancmange.

Really excellent mood film.

Very nice, but kind of surprised to find it so high up. I do love a Chipotle burrito, though.

Good? Yes. Great? No.
i would tend to agree with you. no “berries and cream” on display this year
*high five*
I wasn’t blown away by the VW spot either. But 44 million YouTube views later, I must concede it’s greatness. The masses love it.
“its greatness”. Damn.
Are they serious about the VW ad?
Fraggle: Bieber has had over a billion YT hits. Popularity is no guarantee of greatness.
Watch “Never Say Never” and then try to tell me Bieber isn’t great.
Got to love video game spots.
I pretty much agree with your assessment Ben, but was about to stick up for that VW spot when I read Vinny’s comment about berries and cream… Instant perspective.
I’d be very proud of it if it were mine though.
My mum sad she liked that vw ad where the kid wears a cape. I said what’s so fuckin’ good about it. She said it was funny. I said why would that make anyone go out and buy the car. She just said it was funny. I swear I must have been adopted.
Yawn. Where’s the PlayStation Michael ad? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdWkKKSckNk
I like the writing of this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9uwjUKkLsQ
And this is the best use of a giraffe ever:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0fa_BaljjQ
Puma was last year.
That is a good use of a giraffe, though.
And yes, I’d have to agree that ‘Michael’ is better than almost all of that list.
@Paul yes, yes!
@ben I guess I’m still there 🙂
I think they got the top 2 right from that list. I’d say ‘Back to the Start’ was better than VW though and the only one that really intrigued me.
Michael spanks them both though.
To Michael!
out of that list its snickers (humour and self-reference), cravendale (cultural relevance), dead island (concept), canal+ (humour+resolution), in no particular order.
i hate to have included dead island, because its splatter-zombie shit. the music makes it look quite beautiful.
I like the Snickers ad best. Humorous and to the point.
but what’s it have to do with Christmas?
http://www.heyimjustsaying.com/2011/11/29/what-is-christmas-and-how-did-it-start/
i think the VW spot was a great tactical creative use of the super bowl. it worked well within that context. prob the best of the bunch.
Good point Vinny. We should remember the context. Dad and son watching the superbowl together. Bang.
did anyone notice that renault did the exact same ad as nissan’s steam power extravaganza?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKg-LPOXIMs
The Force is definitely the best, but for No.2 maybe I’d go Snickers, as a few others have said.
The Chipotle thing really pisses me off. In fact the whole free range thing really pisses me off. So we’re going to let animals run around for a bit, before we kill them? Great. That’s really caring.
why is the vw ad so great? its borrowed interest: darth vader and cute kids. im surprised theres not a puppy in there too.
the remote start is a usp?
the kid is the star. id like to know how many people remember the brand. or whether vw got better research results after the ad aired.
its a really nice piece of entertainment, no doubt. but the best out of that list of actual ads? but then, i prefer the greenpeace spoof anyway.
scamp, i take it you are living vegan. good on you.
oi ben, off the record: its adweek, not adage? unless they think the same.
Changed, thanks.
