Sainsbury’s Christmas

This is a really good one. I think it’s what Tesco’s wishes it was.
It smothers Tesco’s effort in brandy butter then sets light to it.
Great observations, and even though you know (I assume) that this was all shot in August, it feels really genuine (see ‘truth’ post below).
And it got me 94% of the way to a tear or two.
UPDATE: apparently it’s all genuine footage from last Christmas. That makes it even better.
ACTUALLY, SECOND UPDATE: the more I think about it, the more the ‘money shot’ (the returning soldier) bothers me. The other scenes are just gently funny reminders of the Christmas we all love and enjoy; THAT shot is a giant supermarket that makes hundreds of millions of pounds a year using the incredibly emotional moment of a soldier retuning safely to his family for the purpose of selling Jaffa Cakes/sprouts/cheap whisky. I don’t see what one has to do with the other and feel a bit like another giant corporation has cynically used a family’s emotion to make a bit more money.
Thoughts?
Best Christmas “ad” ever.

Great ad. I went the 100% on the tears!
Excellent. I like this vastly more than the rest precisely because it feels genuine. The loner with the spreadsheet is terrific fun. The returning soldier will have them blubbing. Ok, we all know it’s based on the film but it’s not as if they’re trying to hide that. Top work.
I love this.
It likes people.
Yeah, nice work. It does feel very “true”. And the agency keeps the client happy be saying “it’s digital” cos the film’s on YouTube. Everyone else is fucked. I cried liked Ciaran.
It wasnt filmed in August its all genuine footage from last Christmas. Its great.
Lovely. (Although I have no desire to see the 55 minute version)
Me neither.
Its funny – this ad gently and truthfully reminds me of why I love Christmas and therefore I respond emotionally/positively towards the brand. Whereas the Tesco ad seems to TELL me why I love Christmas and I have a very ‘duh yeah I know that’ response and feel a little bored/cynical towards the brand trying to sell me stuff. (must add though that I don’t actually mind the Tesco ad in the light of all other drudge on telly).
Give me Slade over Keane any day.
Yeah love this. Totally agree about the ending though. For me the rest of it is more emotional because it’s relatable and then, even though I did well up at the soldier but, I feel like I’m emotionally ambushed. Seems like a lazy way to make sure it’s really really emotional.
Great though, my partner and I were even saying after seeing Tesco that we wish it had been done with real footage.
This is a masterclass in how to take the agency’s corniest brief and make something great. Just ace. Really jealous, but I should be, there are some proper creatives on this one and it shows.
Have you seen this Christmas ad?

The Range ad is batshit crazy. Would loved to have been at the client presentation. “Yeah, that’s right… lasers. Have another sherry, Barry”.
The only thing I’d say is that it’s a bit …
white
Everything below the waist is kaput.
Anon #10, if that was satire, I loved it. More please.
THAT RANGE AD IS FUCKING BRILLIANT!!!
It is fucking awesome.
